Astrobotic Uses Ansys Software to Prepare for Historic Lunar Mission

ROCHESTER, NY, January 3, 2024 – Space robotics technology company and SimuTech Group customer, Astrobotic, is set to launch its Peregrine lunar lander on January 8, 2024. The mission aims to deliver 20 payloads from seven nations and five NASA payloads to the Moon as part of the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.

In Astrobotic’s lunar lander, Ansys’ multiphysics and digital mission engineering (DME) tools played a crucial role in predicting spacecraft performance indicators, optimizing the design and ensuring durability in the challenging cislunar environment. “We use simulation to test and then optimize our design based upon feedback by our simulating models,” explains Brandon Schoomaker, Mechanical Systems Lead for Astrobotic Technology. Astrobotic’s Peregrine is poised to be a groundbreaking lunar mission, paving the way for future exploration. Our partnership with Astrobotic as well as their collaboration with Space Exploration Engineering further supported the mission’s success. SimuTech Group’s engineering expertise spans multiple physics and industries, allowing us to serve our customers on everything from common engineering challenges to niche projects like this exciting one with Astrobotic.

“Ansys solutions helped us design and validate an innovative lander within a strict mission timeline that a manual approach would not have met,” said Sharad Bhaskaran, mission director, Astrobotic. “Peregrine is poised to be one of the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the Moon since Apollo, so we put it through rigorous testing to ensure it has the durability to withstand extreme cislunar conditions. With expert engineering guidance from SimuTech and Space Exploration Engineering, we are confident the Peregrine is ready to pave the way for the future of lunar operations.”
