Build a practical, repeatable HFSS workflow for RF filter design—starting with eigenmode resonators, then extracting Qext and k12, and finishing with optimization.
Step-by-Step Filter Design Guide Using Ansys HFSS™
Author: Georgiy Brussenskiy
Abstract
This eBook provides a hands-on, step-by-step workflow for designing and tuning RF/microwave filters in Ansys HFSS. It begins with eigenmode simulation techniques using common resonator geometries (including L-shaped, split-ring, U-shaped, and octagonal resonators) to identify modes and validate field behavior.
It then walks through external coupling (Qext) simulations and internal coupling (k12) extraction, including guidance for determining whether coupling between resonators is primarily electric or magnetic.
Finally, it outlines multiple approaches for optimizing filter performance—ranging from Optimetrics-based frequency-domain optimization and derivatives-driven tuning to time-domain tuning and broader optimization toolchains such as optiSLang, SynMatrix, and parametric sweeps.
